SC Gala Raises Funds for Scholarships

1.	Bishop James E. Swanson, Sr. and Mrs. Delphine Swanson were elated to learn that the conference has named a scholarship in their honor.About 50 South Carolinians attended the “Evening of Elegance Scholarship Dinner Gala” on July 22nd. Attendees included local, county and state representatives as well as clergy and lay members of the South Carolina Conference. 

The annual event aims to increase awareness of the needs of Africa University students and raise funds for scholarships. It featured a silent auction and keynote address by the associate vice chancellor for institutional advancement for Africa University, Mr. James H. Salley.

Planning and implementation of the gala was led by the African American Taskforce of the South Carolina Ethnic Local Church Concerns Committee (SC ELCC), chaired by Rev. J. Elbert Williams.

 “I’m grateful to everyone who saw it in the hearts to donate to Africa University, even when they could not attend,” said SC ELCC chair, Rev. Carleathea Benson.

 Rev. Williams described the evening as a wonderful success thanks to the many contributions from persons from across South Carolina and lauded supporters for investing in higher education “in a place where it will have a global impact.”

The Anderson and Greenville Districts of the South Carolina Conference came together to host the gala at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church.
